This competition finalist scheme brings simple but powerful coherence to the very complex site constraints and systems requirements of the terminal. The notion of the “great hall” associated with travel seems to have been lost in many new terminals. Our proposal blends the functional effi ciencies of a linear terminal design, with the more inspiring spatial experience of great hall designs of previous eras. A large zinc shell defi nes the terminal’s main arrival/departure hall, which is punctuated by sculptural skylights and brie-soliels. Qingdao is a city of remarkable landscape and gardens, and the terminal introduces travellers to powerful relationships to internal and external garden spaces.
